La Mara (The Gang – Scripted Series)
A viscous but sophisticated gang, La Mara, uses teen-age killers to control Latino immigrant communities in the NYC area. A small, under-funded squad of NYPD detectives fights to take them down. Innocent civilians are caught in the war-zone.
Co-created by an NYPD Detective who‘s in the fight, La Mara rings true on all levels. - Narcos meets The Wire in a unique world.
The Cops, led by tough, street-smart but deeply flawed VARGAS, are real people with dreams, fears, doubts, outside lives and ambitions that sometimes create suspicions and divided loyalties. There are no clichéd characters, just reality-based men and women. Intra-squad conflicts, City Hall politics, agenda-driven Feds and private troubles make the job harder.
La Mara is led by a clever but brutal shot-caller, PANTERA, and his Lady MacBeth like sister, LOUISA. She is the real brains behind the clique and can switch from soccer-mom to butcher in a heartbeat. They use young (13-17) immigrants, male and female, as soldiers in the gang’s war on the world. Each young homey is real, unique and a fully developed, multi-layered character,.
The Civilians, mostly women and youths caught in the storm, are all composites of people known to the writers. Their stories of being victimized or losing loved-ones to La Mara are heart-breaking and tragic. Some are killed by La Mara. Some join La Mara to survive. All are genuine.
All three worlds, Cop, Gang, Civilian are fully developed and realistic. Each is populated with multi-faceted characters and story-lines. Most key characters are multi-season. Violence is used when it makes sense. But violence is not the story. People, the cops, homies and civilians, are the story.
The strong PILOT tracks Pantera and Luisa’s effort to select likely young homies in Central America where they have to prove themselves. Once chosen SLEEPY, LARGO and TIBURON take the dangerous journey north to our border. They lie to over-worked US personnel and are granted asylum. The government delivers them to NYC and into the hands of La Mara. Once in NY, these young killers have to prove themselves again. Luisa sees Sleepy as special.Tiburon is a true sociopath. Largo hates La Mara and looks to escape. At the same time, prompted by the killing the new arrivals commit, Vargas fights his bosses to form a team solely focused on the gang. The team is small, uncertain and in the dark about the true nature of La Mara. The A story is established. B & C stories are hinted at. The key players and conflicts are introduced. The stage is set for a long, hard war that will run for years and get personal.
